First Communion

Communion was nothing new to me. Growing up in a Lutheran home, it was a semi-regular part of my spiritual life as a child. Honestly, at the time, I did not fully understand what it meant, the Lutheran point-of-view, or why we were doing it. I knew that it somehow represented Jesus dying for us on the cross, but I never thought about it much more than that. All I truly remember was how awful wine tasted. I am still not a fan of it to this day. I avoided it as much as possible, which wasn't difficult because our family didn't attend church that regularly. When we did go, I remember avoiding communion any way I could.

At school, friends were telling stories about their First Communion. They were Catholic kids that had taken communion for the first time. Why was it such a big deal? I remember feeling sorry for how often those friends had to attend church. It seemed like they were going multiple times a week just to complete all of the Catholic requirements. I felt lucky to avoid all of that. Sure, I went about once a week for an hour or so, but that was manageable. I knew that in a few short years, I would be confirmed, and I could leave it all behind me. Communion was a part of that. It wasn't a big deal. We didn't have a special party for it; it was just something that we did.
